The chance of a loose standing sensor low on the ground being hit directly by a lightning strike is very small. Mounting higher onto structures, e.g. weather stations, will significantly increase the chances. Some considerations to reduce the risk:
- keep it low;
- keep the footprint on the ground small;
- keep external cables as short as possible;
- keep isolated from other structures, e.g. weather station mounting pole;
- mount lower that the top of another conductive structure, e.g. weather station mounting pole.
